Varis Half-Elven was not of woman born. A tiefling wizard named Akta Demodean created him in one of her early hybrid breeding experiments. Akta was obsessed with having children. As far as is known, she had none of her own. But Varis was one of the first successful results of her efforts to create a ritual for producing children through magical means. Her ritual allowed her to combine samples taken from two parents, wiling or otherwise, into a newborn baby. She began with a half-human half-elven child because of the long known success of that cross. But from that success she quickly discovered that her ritual allowed her to create hybrids from almost any set of samples. She had created dozens of such children over a period of several years when the forces of the Temple of Bahamut stormed her stronghold.
When the children were found in the care of Akta's demon nursemaids the Temple did what they could for them. Some of the children were born of quickly maturing stock and escaped during the chaos of the attack. Some were bred of such intrinsically evil lineage that they fought by the side of the demons. The Temple did their best to find good homes for the children that were normal enough to fit into society. Some were so horribly misbred that they had no place in the world of mortals. Those the Temple helped on to a better place.
Varis was one of the lucky ones, though sometimes his sleep is haunted by the nightmares of his youth. When he grew up, he joined the Temple that had saved him as a child determined to do what he could to follow their example of justice and mercy.
