Among his halfling clan, Merric is thought of as being very unlucky. His reputation for being on fate's bad side began when a bit of crumbling masonry tumbled him into a well as a young child. Merric climbed out of the well. A few years later he was trapped in a collapsed mine with some of his friends. Merric led them out past unstable floors and rickety timber framing. When a relatively large scaffolding being used to erect a village common building collapsed under him, his nickname became a permanent fixture. Merric rode the scaffolding to the ground by jumping from collapsing part to part and finally swinging down to the ground from a dangling rope than came near to hand.
Merric smiles whenever anyone calls him by his epithet. He may have been part of more accidents than anyone else in his small village, but he also believes that he's probably the only one from his village who could have survived even one of them, much less the whole series. If Merric has more than his share of unluckiness, then he has a compensating share of survivability and the latter probably more than balances the former. One day his luck might catch up with him, but until that day Merric lives each day to the edge.
He's trained his survivability into a workable profession. Most of his skills help him get into and out of places he's not supposed to be. His naturally outgoing and merry personality make him easy to underestimate. He's come under the tutelage of the Temple of Bahamut as what they like to call an intelligence operative. Merric likes to call it being a spy.
