Baern is the wrong son of the patriarch of his Dwarven clan. His mother was an acolyte of the clan temple, but was not the Matriarch of the Hammerheart Clan. Ordinarily, such an indiscretion could be swept down the mineshaft, except that Baern turned out to be so much bigger, stronger, and smarter than all of Hammerheart's legitimate children. This situation led to jealousy from the Matriarch's children and worry over a popular demand for Baern to succeed his father. One morning Baern awoke to discover that evidence had surfaced that he was a secret worshipper of Tiamat plotting to kill the Clan Chief seize control. The Matriarch and a faction of her children lobbied for an immediate execution. The Patriarch argued the sentence down to exile.
Baern has since traveled the world a bit. Recently, he has attached himself to the Temple of Bahamut as muscle for some of their more active endeavors. Working for the temple of the arch-nemesis of the god he was banished for being accused of serving gives him a certain sense of satisfaction.
